Installation Instructions

(1) Download the compressed file from the links given above.
(2) Extract the Rar file using any version of WinRar. (Could take 10-20 minutes)
(3) You will find two iso files in the decompressed folder.
(4) Those two are the 32Bit and 64Bit versions.
(5) Write one of those two files to a DVD disk or USB disk.
(6) Boot your computer using it and install Windows 10.
(7) Or else you can upgrade to Windows 10 using the Setup.exe file.

      How to Use Windows Loader (Latest Version)

       The following are the full instructions on where to download and how to use the Windows Activator:

      1. Install Windows 7 (Don’t enter the product key and just click Next to proceed during installation until finished).

      Installation Prerequisite Check for ConfigMgr 2012

      Installation Prerequisite Check for ConfigMgr 2015. When starting a new ConfigMgr installation there are many prerequisites that must be configured first. In this blog I will mention the most important ones.



      The most known requirements are:
      • Schema extensions: Configuration Manager Active Directory schema extensions are not required for site server installation, but are recommended to fully support the use of all Configuration Manager features; TechNet
      • WSUS SDK on site server: ConfigMgr software update points require at least WSUS v3.0 SP2.  If using a remote software update point, the WSUS administration console must be installed on the site server;
      • Microsoft RDC library registered: The Microsoft Remote Differential Compression (RDC) library must be registered for ConfigMgr site server installation; TechNet
      • SQL Server service running account: The logon account for the SQL Server service cannot be a local user account or LOCAL SERVICE.  You must configure the SQL Server service to use a valid domain account, NETWORK SERVICE, or LOCAL SYSTEM;
      • Verify site server permissions to publish to AD: The site server might be unable to publish to Active Directory. The computer account for the site server must have Full Control permissions to the System Management container in its Active Directory domain; TechNet
      • SQL Server version: ConfigMgr sites require a supported SQL Server version with required hotfixes for site database operations to succeed. Before Setup can continue, you must install a supported version of SQL Server on the specified site database server; TechNet
      • SQL Server sysadmin rights: Either the user account running Configuration Manager Setup does not have sysadmin SQL Server role permissions on the SQL Server instance selected for site database installation, or the SQL Server instance could not be contacted to verify permissions;
      • BITS installed: Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is required for the management point and distribution point site system roles. Also, check if IIS/BITS services are running properly. Setup cannot continue until BITS is installed and enabled in the IIS settings;

      Most other Prerequisite Checks can be found HERE. These are for ConfigMgr 2007, but will still be valid for 2012 installation.

      Guide to install Windows 8 on a VHD Virtual Hard Disk

      Yesterday I posted a blog about installing Windows 8 on a virtual machine. Easy to do, but not exactly what I want. This because i think it's better to create a VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) and use the full resources of your device. Today my second install of Windows 8 takes place, this time on a VHD. The following steps are needed to get it done.

      1) Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and install it on your Windows device. Download
      2) Start the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and follow the steps. Select the Windows 8 ISO and use a empty USB device (4GB min.)


      Select the Windows 8 ISO file on the hard disk
      Use an empty USB device for installing Windows 8
      Select the empty USB device and start/begin copying
      Copy job is done and the USB device is ready to use now!
      3) Open Disk Management and create a VHD file with Action > Create VHD. I've selected a dynamically expanding 20GB Virtual Hard Disk.

      It's also possible to use DISKPART for that, but I'm just a GUI user. The steps needed for this will be then:
      • DISKPART
      • CREATE VDISK FILE="D:\VHD\Win8.vhd" TYPE=Expandable MAXIMUM=20000
      • SELECT VDISK FILE="D:\VHD\Win8.vhd"
      • ATTACH VDISK
      • CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY (optional)
      • EXIT
      Just create a VHD file on your hard disk with enough free space
      4) Now it's time to start from the bootable USB device. Choose USB when booting in the BIOS boot order menu. Windows 8 installation is starting then from the USB device!
      5) Choose for a Custom installation, dont select an existing partition but just press SHIFT-F10 for a command window. Now choose the following commands:
      • DISKPART
      • SELECT VDISK FILE="D:\VHD\Win8.vhd" (Use List Disk in Diskpart to see what's drive the VHD is on. It's different then usual, so see comments for that one)
      • ATTACH VDISK
      • EXIT
      6) Select the Windows installation screen again and press Refresh. That way the new created VHD partition becomes available.
      7) Just install Windows 8 on the selected VHD partition, and let the magic happen! It will takes some time..

      During installation a few reboots are needed. After that Windows 8 will be started. Select your network connection (wired/wireless) and start working immediately. There are default Apps for Twitter and Facebook available, so there's enough to do and see ;)

      After the next restart a boot menu becomes available. When choose Options here, there's the choice between Windows 7 (existing OS) and Windows Developer Preview (a.k.a. Windows 8).

      Both Operating Systems can be used by now, no need to use a virtual machine (or something like that) anymore. Just experience the full OS on full screen with all hardware resources available! Mine is running on 1680x1050 and wireless connection. That way Windows 8 will let you experience the true functionality.

      Update: This guide can also be used for Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Just remember to write down the product key needed.

      Update 1-3-2012: When the 0x000000f error is showed on first boot, and no OS can be started at all, just try the following:
      • Boot from USB to be able to select your Windows (7) OS
      • Remove Windows 8 from boot order with BCDEDIT
      • Disable BitLocker (!)
      • Try again…

      Wake On LAN (WOL) functionality in ConfigMgr

      In ConfigMgr 2007/2012 Wake On LAN (WOL) functionality is available. This can be used to schedule OS deployment, Software distribution and Patch management during non-working hours to wake-up devices. In ConfigMgr there are a few checkboxes which must be set to make it functional. In this blog I will describe which settings there are, and what else is needed on routers/switches. 

      First choose properties on the Site Server for Wake On LAN properties:


      When enable Wake On LAN for this site, only wake-up packets can be selected. For having power on commands also, the Out of Band service point role must also be added. In ConfigMgr 2007 this can be done without any difficulty (but an AMT provisioning certificate is still needed). In ConfigMgr 2012 an AMT provisioning certificate is directly needed. When using WOL functionality instead of Out of Band, no configuration is needed on this role.

      Out of band management in ConfigMgr 2007 SP1 and later provides a convenient way to control computers that have the Intel vPro chip set and a version of Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT) firmware that is supported by Configuration Manager. Have a look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc161828.aspx for all functionality, and differences with WOL.

      When choosing advanced, multiple values can be set. I leave them most of times on default values. There is also the choice between Subnet-directed broadcast and Unicast, which is selected by default. Microsoft recommends using Subnet-directed broadcasts in ConfigMgr. I will explain the difference between these options.

      Unicast, as the transmission method for sending wake-up packets to a computer in a ConfigMgr site, uses the IP address of the target computer from hardware inventory to route to the target computer's subnet, and it uses the MAC address of the target computer from hardware inventory to construct the wake-up packet. When the wake-up transmission reaches the target computer's subnet, the wake-up packet is sent directly to the target computer. More:

      Subnet-directed broadcasts, as the transmission method for sending wake-up packets to a computer in a ConfigMgr site, uses the MAC address and IP subnet address of the target computer from hardware inventory. The wake-up transmission is sent to the computer's last known subnet, and it is then broadcast to all computers on that subnet. For this method to be successful, all intervening routers must be configured to forward subnet-directed broadcasts.       By default UDP port 9 is configured. This can be changed to a custom UDP port, if Wake On LAN isn't working. Sometimes port 12287 is used to get it working then. Otherwise it may be unchanged.

      What else is needed for Wake On LAN functionality?

      1) The ConfigMgr client must be functional on devices
      2) Hardware Inventory must be running, and information must be uploaded in the ConfigMgr database
      3) IP/Subnet-directed broadcast is needed on routers/switches for broadcast forwarding

      Other Conditions for Wake On LAN to work:

      1) Wake-up packet transmissions are sent only from Primary site servers
      2) Wake on LAN option to Power On in BIOS should be enabled
      3) WOL requires information of both IP and MAC Address (IP address for location, MAC address to receive magic packets)
      4) Information of machine should be in ARP cache of the router (ARP is a mapping of MAC and IP addresses)
      5) WOL will not be able to wake a Bare Metal Machine since its has not reported back its inventory with its IP address

      When Hardware Inventory is not available for a device, no Wake On LAN functionality is possible. Especially the Network Adapter and Network Adapter Configuration is needed to resolve the MAC and IP addresses. 
      On the routers/switches broadcast forwarding must be configured. Then all is done to have Wake On LAN functionality working. Now have a look which components in ConfigMgr supporting WOL.

      WOL functionality is supported for Software distribution, Software Updates, and OS deployment. Just create an advertisement for that and enable Wake On LAN as part of a mandatory assingment.

      When choosing an Advertisement start time during non-working hours, with Wake On LAN enabled, that will be the time when devices will start-up and run the task(s) specified. During installation, updating and/or deploying different reports and logs can be viewed to control them.

      Report: "All computers targeted for Wake On LAN activity"
      Report: "All sites that are enabled for Wake On LAN" 

      Wolmgr.log - Contains information about wake-up procedures such as when to wake up advertisements or deployments that are configured for Wake On LAN.
      WolCmgr.log - Contains information about which clients need to be sent wake-up packets, the number of wake-up packets sent and retried.

      Downgrading Windows 8.1 from Enterprise to Pro

      Because of the free Windows 10 upgrade coming for Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 editions, I did a downgrade from Windows 8.1 Enterprise to Professional, keeping all my files, applications and settings.
      Let's have a look how to do that. Just remember, it's probably not a valid downgrade, but it works perfectly. As long you have a valid product key, nothing illegally is done.

      The following Windows versions can upgrade free to Windows 10 Home: Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 8.1 editions
      The following Windows versions can upgrade free to Windows 10 Pro: Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro For Students editions
      The following Windows versions can upgrade free to Windows 10 Mobile:       Windows Phone 8.1 only


      Guide to downgrade Windows 8.1 Enterprise to Professional:
      1. Open regedit.exe and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
      2. Change ProductName to Windows 8.1 Professional
      3. Change EditionID to Professional
      4. Navigate now to HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
      5. Change ProductName to Windows 8.1 Professional
      6. Change EditionID to Professional
      7. Close regedit.exe (no need to restart)
      8. Start the Windows 8.1 Pro installation

      With that you're done and a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro is possible! Features missing are Enterprise options like Direct Access and language packs, but I don't miss them on my home PC. Happy upgrading to Windows 10 :-)

      Note: This guide will work for Windows 7 and 8 as well.

      Key Management Services (KMS) explained

      When installing Windows Server 2008 (R2) or Windows Vista / 7 in your network you must think about volume activation. With volume activation there are two (2) different models for completing this. These are Key Management Service (KMS) and Multiple Activation Key (MAK). Both are working and has there own benefits.
      • Key Management Service (KMS) – KMS activates operating systems on the local network, so individual computers doesn't has to connect to Microsoft. KMS clients connects with a KMS host for activation.
      • Multiple Activation Key (MAK) - MAK requires computers to connect one time to a Microsoft activation server. Once computers are activated, no further communication with Microsoft is required.

      Because KMS becomes more and more implemented in projects I will explain it in detail. I will no further explain MAK in this blogpost, because it's known by most people.

      KMS requires a minimum number of either physical or virtual computers in a network environment to become functional. These minimums, called activation thresholds, are set so that they are easily met by enterprise customers. For computers running:
      • Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 you must have at least five (5) computers to activate.
      • Windows Vista or Windows 7 you must have at least twenty-five (25) computers to activate. These thresholds can be a mix of server and client machines to make up the threshold number.
      • Office 2010, Project 2010 and Visio 2010 you must have at least five (5) computers to activate. If you have deployed Microsoft Office 2010 products, including Project 2010 and Visio 2010, you must have at least five (5) computers running Office 2010, Project 2010 or Visio 2010.

      The KMS service can be installed on a (existing) server or client!, and will place an record in DNS for recognition. The following commands are available to use in combination with a KMS host: 

      When using Windows Server 2008 (R1) or Windows Vista systems an hotfix is needed. This will extend support for KMS to provide activation for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The KMS host will be upgraded from version 1.1 to 1.2 with this hotfix.
      The command for installing KMS with a product key or updating an existing one is "cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk {product key}". After that restarting of the KMS service is needed. This can be done with the following commands: "net stop slsvc" and "net start slsvc". When it's functional it can be tested with the "slmgr.vbs /dli" (basic information) and "slmgr.vbs /dlv" (detailed information) commands.

      It's possible to query the DNS server for License keys also. This can be done with the Nslookup –type=all _vlmcs._tcp command. With the "slmgr.vbs /ato" command it's also possible to force a activation renewal. That way it's easier to get the minum required systems activated. When no DNS record is created automatically, you must create one yourself. This can be done with the following guide: Manually Create SRV Records in DNS

      During installation it's possible that the following error message is displayed:

      On the client (when KMS is active already) it's possible that the following error is displayed: 0xC004F038. This can be solved with activating enough computers. When this is done (at least 5 servers and/or 25 computers) the error message will be gone. Then activation for all systems will be available!

      One last note: When creating or deploying a Windows 7 image don't use a build-in product key. Otherwise there's the risk that every Windows 7 client behaves like a KMS host. No product key at all is needed on the Windows 7 client. Just activate them by the KMS host which resides on the Windows Server 2008 (R2) server or on a Windows Vista / 7 host.

      Update 18-11-2011: On Windows Server 2008 R2 and/or Windows 7 the commands to restart the KMS service are now: "net stop sppsvc" and "net start sppsvc".

      Just to clarify things:

      The Software Licensing Service existed in Windows Vista, but was replaced in Windows 7. The service that handles the licensing is now called the Software Protection Service (SPPSVC). All of the same procedures and commands still work the same as they did in Windows Vista.

      Also, the associated SL UI Notification Service (SLUINotify) in Vista was changed to the SPP Notification Service (SPPUINotify) in Windows 7. (SPP means Software Protection Platform)
